As we celebrate our 10th year in rescue, we have decided to focus on our sanctuary horses! Drifter’s Hearts of Hope has rescued over 735 horses over the years and our priority has been to find each horse the perfect, forever home. However, occasionally a horse comes along whose best interests are to stay here with us…protected. We are committed to care for each of our sanctuary horses for the rest of their lives and could use your help to do so!
Why do we sanctuary horses? There are a few reasons…
Some of them, such as Tequila, have been adopted and returned 3 times at no fault of her own. Some, such as LuLuLemon and Mijenta, are mostly unhandled with fear of humans (likely due to the way they have been treated in the past) but are such kind horses. Gunnison arrived traumatized with whip marks and burns covering his body. Cedar has been used hard in her prior life and whilst shouldn’t be ridden, she has a lot of life left in her and deserves a good retirement. Snickerdoodle…well, this guy is just Snickerdoodle… we have tried to adopt him out but he makes it very clear that THIS is his home. He brings comic relief to the herd. All of them have earned their right for a peaceful, safe life with no risk of neglect or abuse ever again.
We are actively looking for a few amazing and generous supporters to help us make it financially possible to provide sanctuary to our herd.
We are looking for sponsors!
A sponsor would make an annual donation to DHOH in support of the sanctuary horse of their choice. That donation will go directly to the feed and care of that specific horse. Our goal is to secure a sponsor for each one of the sanctuary horses we care for here at our rescue. As a thank you for your generous support, we invite you to join us at the rescue for a professional photo shoot with the horse you choose to sponsor!
Our average sanctuary horse costs us $2,000 a year for feed, hoof care and medications. Check out the horses in our sanctuary herd and to choose the one you would like to sponsor! We would be so very grateful for your help and support and we know it will mean the absolute world to the horse you choose! We cannot wait to have you out for your professional photo shoot! MEET THE DHOH SANCTUARY HORSES
GOOSE
|
Goose was one of the first horses to join us as part of the Nebraska 58! Fun fact: his name was Barbed Wire and he was one of the first to arrive from Nebraska due to a fresh barbed wire injury. He has been a part of the DHOH herd for 3 years!

SHAMROCK
|
Shamrock arrived during Christmas time in 2019. Shamrock is 32 years young! She was never broke to ride, we assume she had been a broodmare in her previous life. She is very content at DHOH where she will stay!

GUNNISON
|
Gunnison came from a livestock auction in Spring 2021. Gunnison is broke to ride but he has had a traumatic past – he was covered in burns and whip marks. We decided he deserved an easy retirement at DHOH!

SNICKERDOODLE
|
Lil Snickerdoodle was one of our first rescues, he was saved Christmas 2014 from a livestock auction. He has been adopted out a couple times but always finds his way back. He will stay at DHOH because he always brings comic relief!

ROULETTE
|
Roulette arived in Spring 2021 – she was saved from a livestock auction with her 1 day old baby! She is in search of the perfect trainer to match her gentle temperament.

MIJENTA
|
Mijenta is Outlaw's mom, and she was saved from a livestock auction in April 2021. We worked with her for a few months but she wasn’t interested in being handled. She has such a kind demeanor so she will live out her years at DHOH!

LULU LEMON
|
She was saved from a livestock auction in April 2021 along with her 2 week old baby, “Stetson.” We sent her to training but she seems to prefer being a pasture horse! She will live out her days at DHOH.

DJANGO
|
Django came to us through the Annie Project from Cherokee Park where he was a wrangler horse majority of his life. He now has kissing spine and will live out the rest of his years in retirement.

ZOE
|
Our sweet Zoe gal. We ultimately decided to keep Zoe in our sanctuary herd when she was returned to us for the 3rd time quite severely underweight. We felt she's been through enough and those who know her know she doesn't love to work so this easy going life will suit her best.

KEBLER
|
Kebler came to us from Texas out of a kill pen. He unfortunately had a neurological episode when we were evaluating him which is why we decided sanctuary would be best for him.

FRECKLES
|
Freckles came to us from Vermejo dude and guest ranch and was used as a lion hunting horse and wrangler horse in his former life. He's about 25 yrs old and has definitely earned his retirement.

CHROME
|
Chrome came to us through the kill pen and has evolved from a fractious minded, scared of life, unhandled youngster to a confident and brave young mare.

BAILEY
|
Bailey came to us through the Annie Project and was used as a guest horse in her former life. She's about 30 yrs old and has definitely earned her retirement!

JAKE
|
Jake came to us through the Annie Project and was used as a guest horse his former life. He's also about 30 years old and has definitely earned his retirement!

NEMO
|
Nemo came to us from the kill pen where he needed immediate vet care to remove his eye. He has since recovered well but has been deemed unrideable and will live out his best life as a companion horse.
