Resources for Horse Owners in Need

Emergency Vet Bills:
  • The Baco Fund helps horse owners in need with emergency horse-related vet bills.
    • Here is a link to more information about the Baco Fund: http://www.thegreytail.org/the-grey-tailbaco-story.html

Euthanasia Assistance:
  • If you are considering euthanasia for your horse, the Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance provides information at this link as to the criteria for euthanasia and locations for licensed veterinarians: http://www.counwantedhorse.org/for-owners/euthanasia/
  • Horse Plus Humane Society provides $125 towards the cost of humane euthanasia performed by a veterinarian
    • You are able to apply for assistance here: https://www.horseplushumanesociety.org/last-act-of-kindness-for-horses-financial-assistance-for-humane-euthanasia/

Gelding Assistance:
  • One Horse at a Time provides assistance for gelding, emergency feed and emergency medical bills.
    • Here is the link to the application: https://onehorseatatime.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/ohaatgrantapp2013.pdf

Surrendering a Horse:
  • We recommend contacting multiple rescues, and preferably letting them know as far in advance as possible. Many are often full with waiting lists, as we often are, and thus the more notice the better when it comes to needing to surrender a horse.

Informational Resources:
  • United Horse Coalition: https://unitedhorsecoalition.org/resource-database/resources-for-owners/
  • Hay Resources: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/agmarkets/hay-resources
  • Colorado Veterinarians: https://colovma.site-ym.com/search/custom.asp?id=2153
  • Colorado Horse Council: https://www.coloradohorsecouncil.com/about/

Resources for Horse Lovers

If you see a horse in need of law enforcement intervention:
  • If you see a horse that is starving, abused, neglected, abandoned, or stray, you can call the Colorado Humane Society (720-241-7111), your local sheriff’s department, your local brand inspector, police department or animal control.

What to do if you cannot adopt but want to help:
  • Follow, like, and share posts on horse rescue pages
  • Donate to a reputable rescue
  • Volunteer at a reputable rescue
  • Spread awareness about horse rescue and promote adoption
